My Story

The face behind one of the most sought-after books, Moussa Issa's book has become synonymous with success in FRCEM exams. Dr Issa's journey began in a remote area in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is the typical story of a small-town boy who makes it big through sheer determination and hard work.

He grew up speaking French as his mother tongue and graduated from the University of Kinshasa with a medical degree in 2006. After graduation, he flew to South Africa to complete a 24-month medical internship at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital, followed by SHO in Urology and then as Registrar of General Surgery in Cape Town. His extensive background in surgery later laid the foundation for the multitude of trauma cases he saw as an emergency medicine physician, which gave him the added advantage of being able to masterfully treat the most complex trauma.

Always willing to evolve and driven by his desire and appetite to learn medicine in all its aspects, Dr Issa found that the best way to achieve this was to switch to emergency medicine. Emergency medicine provided him with the transition and the pathway to fully utilise his vast knowledge and skills.

Therefore, he first had to pass the FRCEM exams. With limited resources and only one book available in the market at the time, Dr Issa took on the mammoth task of compiling his notes according to the equally intense and exhaustive syllabus. Thus was born the highly acclaimed FRCEM exam book series (FRCEM Primary All-In-One Notes, FRCEM Intermediate Short Answer Question, FRCEM Final Critical Appraisal and FRCEM Final Clinical Short Answer Question). To date, the books are used by ED doctors worldwide to prepare for these exams. After graduating from MRCEM in 2017, it took him only six months to complete the four parts of the FRCEM final exams, which earned him Fellowship of the Royal Emergency Medicine University (FRCEM) in 2019. In addition to his training in emergency medicine, Dr Moussa Issa holds a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Limerick in Ireland.

He is passionate about biomedical research and medical education and is particularly interested in the implementation of prehospital care in low-income countries. For this reason, he has been offered a PhD position in Public Health and HealthCare Systems by Lancaster University from September 2021.
